Chelsea’s Davide Zappacosta was on Tottenham’s radar too, but how far down their list was he?

Chelsea’s search for a full-back led them to making a £25 million move for Torino defender Davide Zappacosta on deadline day.

Zappacosta was not Chelsea’s first choice, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain snubbing them in favour of a move to Liverpool as he wanted to play in midfield instead.

The Mail reported that Chelsea wanted to hijack Tottenham’s deal for Serge Aurier, only to be foiled by an exclusivity clause Daniel Levy had PSG sign which prevented other clubs negotiating for the Ivorian.

Zappacosta was Chelsea’s eventual choice, and he is a name which won’t surprise Tottenham’s staff.

Davide Zappacosta of Torino FC celebrates his goal during the Serie A match between AC ChievoVerona and FC Torino at Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi on April 23, 2017 in Verona, Italy.

SkySports reported in June that the Italy international was scouted by Spurs, along with Mitchell Weiser of Hertha Berlin and Andrea Conti, who this summer went on to leave Atalanta for AC Milan.

At this point Tottenham’s top target was claimed to be Porto’s Ricardo Pereira.

Factoring in Spurs’ eventual choice was Aurier, it’s clear Zappacosta was some way down their shopping list.

Chelsea will hope that the 25-year-old can prove himself worthy of being anything other than a back-up choice. For £25 million, he better be.

The full-back has to step up and show the Blues were right to spend their money on him, and make Tottenham wish they signed him instead of Aurier – which right now is not the case.
