Tottenham Hotspur have compared academy midfielder Rio Kyerematen to Spurs cult hero Christian Eriksen.

The Tottenham media team made the comparison after the 17-year-old helped Spurs reach the Under-18 Premier League Cup final.

Kyerematen scored an outstanding 89th-minute winner against Sheffield United’s U18s at their training ground on Monday.

The teenager’s goal was the only one of the game as Tottenham booked their place in the final against Aston Villa.

Kyerematen finished off a wonderful team move that began with Luca Gunter in goal and also featured Jahziah Linton, Jamie Donley and Mikey Moore.

Tottenham’s media team compared the encounter to the Spurs senior team’s League Cup semi-final second-leg draw at Bramall Lane in 2015.

On that occasion, Christian Eriksen scored a brace, including an 88th-minute goal, to cancel out Che Adams’ own two-goal haul.

The 2-2 draw, combined with Tottenham’s 1-0 win in north London, put Spurs through to the final against Chelsea.

‘It was eerily reminiscent of the 2015 League Cup campaign at first team level,’ began the Tottenham media team.

‘A tough semi-final away to Sheffield United with the snow falling, where a late goal from a certain midfield maestro booked our place in the final.

‘This time it was another graceful midfielder in Kyerematen who came up with the goods as we advanced to face Aston Villa in the showpiece final in a few weeks’ time.

‘The second League Cup final Stuart Lewis’ troops have qualified for in the space of seven days after last week’s Under-17 victory over Chelsea on penalties.’

Goalscoring midfielder

Kyerematen is one of the brightest talents in the Tottenham Under-18 ranks.

Prior to netting against the Blades, he had tallied up four goals and four assists from just 11 outings.

It’s even more remarkable when you consider Kyerematen has largely been playing in central midfield.

The likelihood is that he’ll go up to the Under-21s next season, and hopefully he’ll keep up the good work.

If Kyerematen does especially well, then he could be in line for an EFL loan move.

While it’s still early in his career, he does look like a really exciting prospect.
