Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton spoke after his side’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, bemoaning the manner of the defeat.

The Seagulls were on course to gain a point at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in their battle to avoid relegation, only for Christian Eriksen to rifle home from 25 yards in the 88th minute.

Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld had earlier hit the post while Lucas Moura and Dele Alli both had efforts cleared off the goalline, the hosts weighing in with 29 shots, but just five on target (BBC Sport).

In addition, Tottenham attempted 21 shots from outside the box, the most by a team in a Premier League game since Liverpool also registered 21 against Chelsea in April 2014.

Hughton, a Spurs legend who spent most of his playing career at White Hart Lane, thought the Lilywhites did not get too many clear-cut chances but acknowledged how many “quality players” they have, with their Champions League semi-final place testament to said quality.

In conversation with Sky Sports News, Hughton said: “Spurs had chances but the clear ones were minimal. We defended really well and from our point of a view a few better choices on the ball in that last period would have meant we came away with a result. It’s hard to get up the pitch against them because they have so many quality players. We needed to hold on to the ball better but they pressed well.

“The players will know how hard they’ve worked to get as close as we did. We’re up against a team in the Champions League semi-finals. We put on a gritty defensive performance and that speaks volumes. We have to take that into Saturday against Newcastle and that becomes out biggest game.”

The result keeps Brighton three points above Cardiff City, who are 18th in the Premier League table, with three games to go – Newcastle United at home, Arsenal away and Manchester City at home.

The Bluebirds, meanwhile, travel to already relegated Fulham in their next game, before hosting Crystal Palace, and their final game is away at Manchester United.
