While Premier League teams – and even Championship clubs – spend wildly, Tottenham Hotspur remain one of the most prudent clubs in the country.

Nacer Chadli’s sale to West Bromwich Albion on Monday meant the club’s total net expenditure on transfer fees this summer was just £1.4 million.

Ryan Mason has since been sold to Hull City, with SkySports reporting this was for a £13 million fee.

This puts Spurs’ net spent at £11.6 million in profit heading into transfer deadline day, a fee which will reset to where they started if they can sign Georges-Kevin N’koudou – with the Guardian reporting the deal will cost them £10.9 million.

N’koudou has been linked since July when he underwent his medical with Spurs, and is in England while he waits for his transfer from Marseille to go through.

SkySports report it is being held up while Clinton N’jie’s loan exit is sorted out, but Spurs will hope to get it over the line in time for the transfer deadline.

Spurs have recouped money spent on Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen by selling Alex Pritchard, DeAndre Yedlin, and Grant Ward in addition to Chadli and Mason.

While they could add another new face, with Wilfried Zaha linked in recent days by The Guardian, it is the signing of N’koudou which will most please chairman Daniel Levy, having worked on it for so long, to get his man in the end will be a sign of eventual success in a drawn out battle with Marseille.

N’koudou’s signature will give Spurs a net spent of virtually zero, a feat no title contender this season is able to boast, and he will have given head coach Mauricio Pochettino his three top targets.

Whether the re-shaped squad provides enough for Tottenham to actually compete for the title, is another matter.
