Tottenham cannot afford at any cost to sell Toby Alderweireld to Liverpool.

Liverpool have been urged to take advantage of Tottenham Hotspur’s struggle to tie Toby Alderweireld to a new contract.

Ian Wright told BBC 5 Live’s Monday Night Club (19/3) that he believes the Reds should move for the Belgian defender.

But if Tottenham do decide to sell Alderweireld, Liverpool are the one side Tottenham Hotspur cannot afford to sell him to.

The Reds are evenly matched with Spurs in the Premier League this season, two points ahead of Tottenham although the North London side have a game in hand.

The two clubs sit third and fourth, a long distance from runaway leaders Manchester City.

Liverpool’s problem this season has been defensively, but they have improved since signing Virgil van Dijk.

Signing Toby Alderweireld would be a signing which further transforms their defence, and it would give them arguably the league’s best pairing.

Tottenham’s partnership between Alderweireld and Vertonghen has been the key to their success in recent seasons, and breaking it up would weaken them despite Davinson Sanchez’s impressive debut season.

With midfielder Naby Keita arriving in the summer, Liverpool breaking the bank to sign Alderweireld could transform them into title winners.

If Spurs are going to have to sell, they must do so abroad.

Tottenham already have enough problems trying to compete with Manchester City; they can’t afford to make another Premier League rival stronger too, while weakening their own side.
