Tottenham’s decision to splash out on Moussa Sissoko is looking even more costly.

According to The Guardian, Arsenal have had a bid rejected for winger Thomas Lemar worth £31 million.

Tottenham are also interested the report claims, but they could have their work cut out with Lemar said to be keen on working under Arsene Wenger.

From a financial perspective Monaco’s valuation of Lemar is even worse news for Spurs.

It means buying him would take a club record fee, above the £30 million they agreed to pay for Moussa Sissoko last summer.

As Arsenal fans will testify, buying players can be tough when there is a shiny new stadium to pay for, and Tottenham would be in a far better position right now if they had simply kept the cash instead of spending on a player who made just eight league starts last season.

It could take closer to £40 million to sign Lemar, and Tottenham would find paying this a lot easier if they hadn’t made a huge error in buying Sissoko for a club record sum.

Lemar is a notch above, but the failures of French wingers Georges Kevin N’Koudou and Clinton N’Jie will also offer a cautionary note, with the Monaco star still only 21.

On the face of it Arsenal’s knock back is good news for Spurs, but the Gunners bidding so high only makes Tottenham’s task tougher, especially with no buyers knocking down their door to give them the majority of their cash back for Sissoko.
