Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah is now clear favourite to win the Golden Boot.
Harry Kane’s injury comes as a serious blow to his chances of winning a third consecutive Golden Boot.
Kane is being pushed all the way by prolific Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, with the two players level with eight games remaining.
With Kane facing a spell on the sidelines, Salah will be heavily fancied to finish as top scorer in his first season in English football.
But would Salah’s win be tainted, a win only possible due to Kane’s injury?
This may be a way for rival fans to take a cheap shot at Salah’s potential win, but the Egyptian’s efforts deserve to be hailed and not diminished.
Salah already has 24 goals this season – one fewer than the 25 it took Kane to win the Golden Boot in 2015/16.
Last season Kane finished on 29 to win the trophy.
There is a strong chance Salah tops this, at the rate he is going.
Salah is not even a striker, but is managing to score at a rate which puts expensive centre-forwards to shame.
He has netted more than Romelu Lukaku (14) and Alexandre Lacazette (9) have managed combined.
Kane’s injury will not detract from a momentous season and the Golden Boot will be just deserved for his efforts.
