Tottenham are reportedly looking at a move for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, but a report from German outlet RB Live says that the Bundesliga club would not sell the player – even if Tottenham offer big money.
Gvardiol, 20, joined RB Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb last summer and has since become a permanent member of Domenico Tedesco’s starting XI. This season, he has clocked up 39 games for Leipzig – having a hand in five goals.
He has helped Leipzig keep 11 clean sheets, as Tedesco helps resolve the poor start to the season under current Leeds manager Jesse Marsch. Little surprise, that Tottenham want to bring the Croatia star to North London.
The Athletic say it would cost Spurs a club-record fee – more than Tanguy Ndombele. But the report from RB Live states that even if Spurs bid such a figure, Leipzig are unlikely to accept it. Gvardiol is also happy at Leipzig.
Tottenham miss out on Gvardiol: Would he be the ideal signing?
Tottenham are likely to be in the market for a left-sided defender. Ben Davies has been excellent, and consistent on the left side of the back three, but there is no competition for the experienced Wales ace.
Spurs need a left-sided centre-back to rival Davies – either it gets the best out of him, or Spurs have a top replacement. Gvardiol is perfect. But the cards are with Leipzig – playing, just joined, and a contract until 2026.
The ideal addition – but one that is seemingly out of Tottenham’s reach, at least, for now. If Tottenham do bid more than Ndombele’s £63m (Sky) fee.
