Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies has poked fun at Newcastle United’s defending after their capitulation on Sunday afternoon.
Tottenham were 1-0 down to Newcastle before Davies popped up with the equaliser, heading home Son Heung-min’s cross.
The second half was a masterclass from Tottenham as they coasted to a stunning 5-1 victory.
Matt Doherty, Son Heung-min, Emerson Royal and Steven Bergwijn all found the net after the break to give Tottenham a huge three points.
Tottenham’s top four hopes gain stronger by the week at the moment and smashing Newcastle underlined their Champions League credentials.
For a defender and two wing backs to get on the scoresheet highlights that Newcastle maybe weren’t at their best defensively on Sunday.
That was seemingly understood by both Davies and Doherty as they spoke to Sky Sports after the full-time whistle.
When asked just how unlikely it would be for Davies, Doherty and Emerson Royal to all be on the scoresheet, the Welshman offered a savage verdict on Newcastle’s defending.
Davies simply suggested that Newcastle were ‘giving goals out for free’ against Tottenham, hence so many unlikely goalscorers.
“I think they were probably giving out goals for free today,” said Davies. “We haven’t been all on scoresheet I don’t think, ever,” he added.
That was just the fourth Premier League goal in a Tottenham shirt for Davies, summing up how rare it is for him to score.
Sunday’s defensive horror show was a real blow for Newcastle, who had shown signs of defensive solidity since the January window.
Additions like Dan Burn and Matt Targett have helped but neither of them particularly impressed against Tottenham.
Kieran Trippier’s return will help but Newcastle will almost certainly target a new goalkeeper and centre back this summer.
There will be many more defensive additions to come in future transfer windows and, judging by Sunday’s performance, they will be needed.
