Tottenham Hotspur have pushed themselves to the front of the queue for Blackburn Rovers defender Ashley Phillips as they chase a £3million deal.
That’s according to a report from The Sun as they claim that Tottenham are emerging as the favourites to sign Phillips this summer.
Manchester United and Chelsea have also been showing an interest in signing the 16-year-old centre back.
However, Tottenham are working to get a deal done as soon as possible for around £3million, potentially adding Phillips as their first signing of the summer window.
Phillips is out of contract at Blackburn in 2023, meaning Rovers may feel they need to sell now before they lose control over his future.
The report even notes that Phillips has been likened to Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk – an enormous comparison for such a young player.
Phillips stands at a huge 6ft 4in tall and is now being back for a huge future. In 11 Premier League 2 games this season, Phillips managed two goals.
Blackburn think so highly of Phillips that they named him on the bench for the FA Cup tie against Wigan Athletic back in January.
Boss Tony Mowbray – who is leaving Ewood Park this summer – has already heaped huge pressure on the teenager.
Mowbray has hailed Phillips as ‘phenomenal’ talent, highlighting his pace and passing.
That kind of player will always attract interest and Tottenham now hope to win the race.
Tottenham were first linked with Phillips back in February with Spurs keen to add him to their developmental ranks.
It now looks like Tottenham are favourites to secure Phillips and add him to a number of exciting young talents.
Phillips would be joining Dane Scarlett, Alfie Devine and Harvey White in the Tottenham ranks, giving Spurs fans a glimpse of an exciting future.
