Tottenham Hotspur want Ashley Phillips – but Blackburn Rovers are planning talks this week to try and keep him at Ewood Park.
Tottenham needed to add homegrown talent this summer to solve their growing quota problems.
Fraser Forster and Djed Spence have arrived to help that problem but the recruitment of English players can’t end there.
Tottenham still need more and they have been targeting a deal for a hugely exciting young talent in Phillips.
Tottenham Hotspur want Ashley Phillips
Blackburn talent Phillips has been linked with Tottenham for months now and a deal looked close last week.
The Daily Mail reported that last week that Tottenham were set to win the race for Phillips, ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United.
It was even stated that Tottenham’s director of football Fabio Paratici was heading to watch Phillips in action against Reading whilst hoping to green-light the deal.
What looked like a sure thing is now fading away though with Blackburn having real confidence of keeping their star talent.
Lancs Live report that Phillips is ‘on course’ to sign his first professional deal with Rovers very soon.
It’s stated that new talks over a contract are scheduled for Friday and Blackburn will hope to thrash out a deal then.
Phillips is out of contract next summer, meaning Tottenham would have been able to swoop in and sign him whilst paying compensation.
Instead, Phillips is set to stay at Rovers and a new deal is ’80% done’ according to some sources.
Phillips allegedly wants to continue developing in Lancashire before moving on, meaning Tottenham will have to wait if they want the teenager.
The 17-year-old has been playing first-team football in the Championship this season and has been hailed as an ‘amazing’ footballer by former Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray.
Phillips looks set for a big future but that future looks set to be with Blackburn rather than Tottenham, at least for the time being.
