Darren Ambrose has urged Tottenham to sign Liverpool defender Nat Phillips because they are ‘crying out’ for a player like him, as he told talkSPORT.
The former Crystal Palace player, who is a boyhood Spurs fan, thinks the best thing about Phillips is that he defends ‘first and foremost’.
Even though Phillips helped an injury-ravaged Liverpool side secure Champions League football last season, the hard-hitting defender is still way down the pecking order at Anfield.
Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, are all seemingly ahead of Phillips in the centre-back pecking order.
Given the 24-year-old’s situation at Liverpool, Ambrose thinks ‘more clubs’ will want to sign him in January and he urged Antonio Conte to add him to his squad.
“If I am Spurs, then I am going for him as well,” said Ambrose. “Spurs need their defence sorting out.
“Nat Phillips is a good defender. First and foremost, he defends and that’s what Tottenham are crying out for.
“I think there will be other takers apart from Watford. Potentially, he is already going into a relegation battle.
“Is that something that is going to attract him? I can see more clubs coming in and showing their hand.”

Tottenham already have a few centre-backs that either need shipping out or they are injured.
One of them includes summer signing, Cristian Romero, who is certain to come straight back into the XI once he is ready.
Then there is someone like Joe Rodon, who probably needs to be moved on because it hasn’t worked out for him in north London.
Left-back Ben Davies has also been used in a back three by Conte, so perhaps another centre-back is needed this month, although Spurs fans will want the club to aim higher than someone who struggles to get onto Liverpool’s bench.
