Tottenham Hotspur drew 0-0 away at Everton on Sunday afternoon – and we saw a glimpse into Antonio Conte’s tactical style.
Look, this wasn’t vintage Tottenham. They once again didn’t have a shot on target and are still seeking attacking fluency.
Still, it’s a clean sheet for Tottenham, which is a welcome boost after the 3-0 hammering by Manchester United.
New boss Conte immediately went to a 3-4-2-1 system, which many had anticipated.
It will take some time for Tottenham to really gel in this new setup, but we did see signs of what Conte wants.
In the first half at Everton, Tottenham had a couple of great chances – and they fell to wing backs.
The first fell to Emerson Royal, who headed a Sergio Reguilon cross over the bar. The Brazilian should have done much better, but then it was Reguilon’s turn.
Harry Kane crossed for Reguilon breaking in at the back post, but the Spaniard fluffed his lines.
This is what Conte wants; his wing backs flooding forward and getting into scoring positions.
We saw it at Chelsea with Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso, whilst Achraf Hakimi excelled under Conte at Inter Milan.
Tottenham may have hoped those chances fell to other players on Sunday, but the attacking intent is great to see and surely a sign of things to come.
