Chris Sutton has told Tottenham Hotspur and Daniel Levy to appoint Roberto De Zerbi as their next manager after he helped Brighton and Hove Albion secure Europe for the first time in their 122-year history.

At the end of March, Daniel Levy booted Antonio Conte out of the door, and since then, things have become even worse for Tottenham, who are now set to miss out on European football.

Given the work Roberto De Zerbi is doing at Brighton, Chris Sutton can’t understand why Tottenham aren’t pushing for him and the former striker believes the Italian would take the Spurs job if he was offered it, as he told 606 on BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

In September, when Graham Potter left for Chelsea, those at the Amex Stadium pushed for the signature of the unknown De Zerbi.

It could have been easy for the Seagulls to fall down the table and towards the relegation battle, but not only did their new coach maintain their overachieving work, but he also has taken them to the next level.

That’s including making Brighton more free-scoring, with Sutton sharing his thoughts on the thriving coach.

“The issue Brighton have is holding onto De Zerbi,” said Sutton. “Who wouldn’t want De Zerbi as their manager?

“Where would he go to? I mean, why aren’t Tottenham taking him? Yes (you would leave Brighton to go to Tottenham).”

DE ZERBI SHOULD STAY AT BRIGHTON

It’s understandable if De Zerbi wants to leave because the club are and will continue to allow thriving players to head for the exit door if someone from the next level comes knocking.

But Europe now beckons for Brighton and the 43-year-old should stay to take them on that next journey.

As Graham Potter has proved, it’s not always easy taking that next step and you never know how a certain gig can drown you.
