Tottenham Hotspur’s Andros Townsend says that there were negatives to come from their match against Asteras Tripolis, despite the fact that they won.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Andros Townsend believes that there were negatives which came out of the side’s match against Asteras Tripolis last night.
Spurs may have won the fixture 2-1, moving them closer to qualifying from their Europa League group, but Townsend felt that they could have performed to a higher standard.
Although the England international was pleased with the standard they reached in the opening 45 minutes, he felt that they slipped up in the second half and allowed the Greek side back into the match.
“It was a very good performance in the first half, we scored our goals and controlled the game,” Townsend explained to the club’s official site.
“In the second half for some reason we were open, they countered us too many times whereas maybe we should have been the team to keep the ball, slow the game down and hit them on the counter-attack, but it didn’t work that way.”
Townsend’s own performance was one of his best in recent memory, and he will be hoping that it proved to Mauricio Pochettino that he still has a role to play for the first team.
The Spurs academy product has been linked with a move away from the club in recent times and has had to take a backseat role throughout the season so far under the Argentine boss.
However, his display last night may have given Pochettino a selection dilemma ahead of Tottenham’s weekend clash with Stoke City.
Townsend managed to score Spurs’ first goal of the night before creating the second for Harry Kane, and he says that he is pleased to have made such an impact.
“On a personal level I was just happy to get another 90 minutes under my belt, to get an assist for Harry and to get a goal myself,” he said.
“It was nice for me and now hopefully I can take that into Sunday against Stoke if I’m called upon again.”
