Tottenham defender Matt Doherty has told his club’s website that Lille and Canada striker Jonathan David is his “player to watch” today, with the World Cup star a transfer target for Spurs – as well as Arsenal and Everton ahead of January.
David, 25, comes into the World Cup in immense form. This season for Lille, he has scored an impressive nine goals in 15 appearances – as well as laying on three assists. His form for Canada too is also stunning – 22 goals in 35 games.
Certainly, this season is his best so far. Joining Lille in 2020, he showed glimpses but was yet to add consistency to his game in Ligue 1.He had 32 goals in his first two seasons – good, but not amazing. This term, he has gone up a level.
Give Me Sport reporter Dean Jones claims Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton all want to sign David. Florian Plettenburg says a fee of £42.5m is required. Asked for his player to watch from today’s World Cup games, Doherty picked David.

“I’d go for Jonathan David. He plays for Lille and has scored a lot of goals in the last few season. It will be interesting to see how he gets on against Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, quality defenders. He’s my player to watch.”
Doherty picks Spurs target David as player to watch at World Cup
David is a top, top striker. Still only 25, he is scoring goals at a rate that is up there with the best in Europe. If Spurs need to end up replacing Harry Kane at some point in the future, they could do a lot worse than signing David.
He scores goals at a ratio of better than one to two, and he creates them. This season, he has three assists. In his 194 senior matches, he has laid on 23 assists at club level. Another 13 in his 35 Canada caps. So, a proper talent.
