Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty has told The Guardian that Dennis Bergkamp was the reason he supports Arsenal.
Spurs swooped to sign Doherty in August, landing him from Wolves in a deal that cost around £15million according to the Daily Mail.
The Irishman is still adjusting to life at Spurs, as he is now being asked to play as a right back in a four-man defence under Jose Mourinho.
Doherty played predominantly as a wing back at Wolves, meaning he will have some teething problems whilst adjusting back to a more defensive role.
One thing that Spurs fans have faced with Doherty is his love for Arsenal, as he has never hidden how he supports Tottenham’s bitter rivals.
When Tottenham signed Doherty, the club released a video showing the 28-year-old deleting his old tweets showing his love for Arsenal.
Doherty has now admitted that he thought the video was funny, partly because of his own bad acting in the clip.
Doherty added that his mother is Dutch, so he felt an affinity with Dennis Bergkamp – and that’s pretty much the only reason he chose to support the Gunners as a kid.
“It’s well documented that I had previous tweets and they asked me to do a few shots on the video,” said Doherty. “I knew they were going to put something together but when I saw the end product it was quite funny and I’m glad it went down really well. People have messaged me and said how bad the acting was and that’s probably fair.”
“My mam is Dutch and Dennis Bergkamp is Dutch and that link got me interested in the game and watching him going forward. So it’s an unusual link [to Arsenal] but that’s what it was,” he added.
