The Tottenham Hotspur star discussed the merits of VAR yesterday.
Tottenham ace Jan Vertonghen spoke to reporters after his side’s hard-fought win over Manchester City on Tuesday night, and suggested that he might have to change the way in which he defends because of VAR, as quoted by the Telegraph.
Spurs beat City on Tuesday, despite giving away an early penalty – one that was subsequently saved by Hugo Lloris, after Danny Rose was adjudged to have handled the ball inside his own box.
There were no appeals from City, and the Tottenham players looked like they were almost in shock as the footage was being checked by the VAR officials.
The ball undoubtedly struck Rose’s hand, but there was certainly no intent, and when VAR does get introduced to the Premier League, defenders will have to be extremely careful.
Vertonghen told reporters how he will have to go as far to actually changing the way in which he defends, as quoted by the Telegraph:
“I think so many things look like a penalty in slow motion. The PSG-United game, everything looks like a penalty now. I think we have to change the way we defend.”
Tottenham will take a slender one goal advantage into the second-leg of their Champions League clash with City, and Vertonghen and co will have to be on their very best form, if they are to make it through to the semi-finals of the competition.
