Tottenham Hotspur will travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea on April 1st.
Tottenham ace Jan Vertonghen sat down for an exclusive interview with Belgian media outlet DH, and shared the reason why he wanted to see Chelsea progress through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League earlier this month.
Spurs have enjoyed a fine season thus far, and currently sit in fourth position in the Premier League table, five points clear of fifth placed Chelsea, with the two side’s set to face off against each other on April 1st, in a game that could have huge ramifications regarding the race for the top four.
And the date of that fixture is part of the reason why Vertonghen wanted to see the west Londoners emerge victorious from their clash with Barcelona.
The 30-year-old sat down for an exclusive interview with Belgian publication DH, and shared why he wanted Chelsea to beat the Spaniards:
“We play against Chelsea on April 1st, pfft, it’s always the same thing. I cannot come to see the Tour of Flanders live. So if Chelsea had eliminated Barcelona in the Champions League, the league match against us would have been moved to Saturday and I could have come. I would really like to discover the atmosphere in real life.”
If Mauricio Pochettino’s men manage to beat Antonio Conte’s side, it could very well all but wrap up their qualification for next season’s Champions League, and that would allow them then to focus on the FA Cup, as they look to win their first major trophy since 2008.
