Tottenham defender says club need to perform better away from home.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has been talking about the club taking the next step to win the Premier League.
Spurs finished second last season and were unbeaten at home at White Hart Lane.
They move to Wembley this campaign while their new stadium is under construction, and while they will be looking to continue to win their home games, Vertonghen says winning big away games must be a priority.
He told Sky Sports Premier League Preview (9/8 10am): “Part of the reason we finished second instead of first was we didn’t beat our rivals away from home and that is where we need to improve.”
Last season on their travels Tottenham were beaten by Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.
They drew matches away to Arsenal and Manchester City, cumulatively earning just two points out of a possible 15.
While they beat four of the five team at home – with a draw versus Liverpool the only exception – Vertonghen is correct, clearly this is an area Tottenham must step up in if they are to win the title.
Quizzed about the lack of signings at the club so far this summer, Vertonghen skirted around the issue, insisting he feels as a squad Tottenham can get even better with the players they have.
He said: “Our biggest advantage is our age. I’m the oldest outfield player and I’m still young. We can improve so much.”
Tottenham begin their Premier League campaign on Sunday when they take on Newcastle at St. James Park.
