Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of creating history.

Hugo Lloris of Spurs looks on during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton at Wembley Stadium on December 26, 2017 in London, England.

Hugo Lloris spoke to reporters today, and insisted that he never expected to be in Champions League final with Tottenham this soon into Mauricio Pochettino’s reign, as quoted by ITV Sport.

Spurs have taken everyone by surprise by reaching the Champions League final this season, and now only Liverpool stand in their way of lifting Europe’s premier trophy for the first time in their history.

The Merseyside outfit are clearly favourites for the final in Madrid, but the Tottenham players will be safe in the knowledge that on their day, they can beat anyone.

When Pochettino took over as manager of Spurs way back in May 2014, even the most ardent of Tottenham fans would not have thought that a place in the Champions League final inside five years would be a realistic prospect.

And Lloris told reporters how even he did not expect his team to be where they are now, as quoted by ITV Sport:

“Even after the World Cup, I could not expect to be involved in the Champions League final one year later. This is the beauty of football. Sometimes it can be cruel and sometimes it can be the best. It’s just about the balance.”

Despite the fact that Tottenham will have to be at their very best if they are to beat Liverpool, they are well capable of causing an upset.

And if they are successful in Madrid, Lloris and co will write their names in the history books.
