The Tottenham star was one of the leading contenders for the England captaincy.

During an interview with BBC Radio Five Live the other night, Tottenham star Eric Dier was asked to respond when asked whether he was disappointed at missing out on the England captaincy to his teammate Harry Kane.
The 24-year-old has been a fine servant for Spurs, since joining Mauricio Pochettino’s revolution in north London way back in the summer of 2014, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of just £4 million.
He was overlooked for the England captaincy by Gareth Southgate in favour of Kane, however.
Dier sat down for an exclusive interview with BBC Radio Five Live, and responded when asked if he felt a tinge of disappointment, having been overlooked for the captain’s armband:

“No, not really.”
The 24-year-old then went on to congratulate his teammate for both club and country:
“I wasn’t disappointed. I’m very happy for Harry to be given the opportunity. I think it’s fully deserved.”

Despite not being given the captaincy, Dier will undoubtedly be expected to act as a leader on the pitch for Gareth Southgate’s side at the World Cup this summer.
Not much is expected of the Three Lions, but if they are to have any chance whatsoever of achieving success in Russia, Dier will have to perform at his very best, and set an example for his somewhat more inexperienced teammates, despite the fact that he will not actually be wearing the armband.
