Mauricio Pochettino’s reign at Tottenham will start with a trip to London rivals West Ham, but elsewhere, the fixture list appears to have been kind.
This morning’s Premier League fixture list threw up a relatively decent schedule for new manager Mauricio Pochettino’s debut season at White Hart Lane.
The Argentine has a chance to make a solid start when he takes his team to Upton Park on the opening day. The Hammers managed to beat Spurs three times last season, unparalleled success deemed worthy of the club producing several pieces of merchandise commemorating the fact. If Tottenham can go to East London and take three points it will likely defuse those t-shirts and mugs of the little interest they possess.
Tottenham wrap up the season with a tough trip to Goodison Park, with both teams possibly scrapping against each other for European places.
There is only one occasion when Spurs face sides that finished in last year’s top four back to back, in February when they host fierce rivals Arsenal on the 7th before traveling to Liverpool three days later. The other North London derby is fairly early on, when Tottenham head to the Emirates on September 27th.
A testing New Year schedule sees two home games, with the club hosting Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United in the last game of the year, before entertaining Chelsea on New Year’s Day. The games with Chelsea will both be done and dusted within a month, with Spurs already having visited Stamford Bridge in early December by the time they play the Blues again in the New Year.
The first big test for Spurs is likely to be the visit of Liverpool to White Hart Lane, just three matches in, especially since the Reds scored a big win last season in what turned out to be Andre Villas-Boas’ last game in charge.

One of the tougher periods for Spurs starts with the North London derby in September, before Pochettino’s old club Southampton come to White Hart Lane, surely with a point to prove to their old manager. Then after the international break they face a daunting trip to champions Manchester City, where Tottenham lost 6-0 last season.
But all in all, fans can be happy that they didn’t have some of the tough runs they had last season, and the final 8 games only see two matches against clubs that finished above them in 2013-14, giving plenty of chances for a late season surge to, hopefully, Champions League qualification.
