Glen Johnson has expressed that he is ‘totally shocked’ that Jose Mourinho hasn’t been able to turn things around at Tottenham, as he told Soccer Saturday (04/07/20 at 1:35 pm).

Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino in the Tottenham dugout in November and instantly made his mark with a win at the London Stadium.

Whilst there have been some good moments, Spurs have also produced some questionable performances, including during their recent defeat to Sheffield United.

Former England right-back Johnson, who worked with Mourinho at Stamford Bridge, admitted that he expected more from the ‘world class’ boss.

“I am totally shocked, if I am honest with you,” Johnson told Soccer Saturday. “I thought when Mourinho first went there, I thought this was going to be a genius move for them.

“Obviously, I know the man very well. And I was very confident at what he was going to do with the current players he had in the squad available to him. I thought he would push them further forward.

“In terms of the position of where the club is, they have a fantastic board, a fantastic stadium and a good squad. Now, they have a world-class manager. You kind of think ‘where is it all going wrong?’.

“So, I am certainly surprised. I thought Mourinho would kick them on a lot earlier than he had done because they have also spent money. It’s not like he hasn’t got in the players that he didn’t want. I am very shocked.”

Finishing in a European place is still a possibility for Tottenham, but not achieving that target will raise question marks over Mourinho.

Whilst his real test will come next season, the former Champions League winner is finding himself under the spotlight.

Mourinho will point his critics towards his trophy haul, but as always with the out-spoken coach, the drama follows him everywhere.
