Ian Wright has told the Kelly & Wrighty show that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is performing beyond his expectations following his move to Tottenham in the summer.

The former striker shared that he didn’t think the combative midfielder would be doing ‘as well as he is doing it’.

Spurs recorded a deserved 2-0 win against Manchester City over the weekend to move to the top of the table and Hojbjerg was perhaps the best player on the pitch.

Wright shared that the Denmark international is now performing at a level that the likes of Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks can’t perform at.

“He has recognised that Hojbjerg could do that job,” said Wright. “I didn’t think he would do it as well as he is doing it if I am totally honest.

“You look at the protection he is giving them. You look at Sissoko and Winks, who were trying to do that defensive role before. They weren’t doing it to this level.

“I think it’s [naturally] in him [for Hojbjerg to put in such performances rather than it coming from Mourinho and his staff]. But I think we wanted to see if he could get to the next level and still do the same thing with better players. You look at the positions he is taking up, you know he’s got it.”

Hojbjerg is fast becoming one of the signings of the summer and the shrewd Daniel Levy has done it once again because they haven’t had to pay big money for his services.

BBC Sport reported in the summer that the North London outfit paid over £15 million for his talents, with their academy product, Kyle Walker-Peters, moving the other way for £12 million.

So, in truth, a certain Levy has only had to cough up around £3+ million for his services and that’s the Spurs chairman defined in a nutshell.
