Southampton are interested in signing former Manchester City defender Tosin Adarabioyo from Fulham in the summer transfer window, according to The Express.

What’s the story?

The Express are reporting today (9am) that Southampton have joined Norwich City in the race for Fulham centre-back Adarabioyo.

The 23-year-old joined Fulham from City last summer for £2 million.

The youngster has a release clause of £10 million in his contract at Fulham, according to this report.

However, The Daily Mail reported in June that the £10 million release clause of the youngster expires 30 days before the start of the Championship season, which began on August 7.

The Saints are looking for a new centre-back to replace Jannik Vestergaard, who has joined Leicester City.

Would Adarabioyo make Southampton better?

Adarabioyo is a very highly rated defender who actually impressed City manager Guardiola during his time at the Premier League champions.

Guardiola told The Manchester Evening News about Adarabioyo in August 2016: “He is fast, he is faster than the people can believe it. He’s strong in the air.”

Adarabioyo may not have been able to establish himself at City, but the youngster did well during his loan spells at West Bromwich Albion and Blackburn Rovers before making the move to Fulham.

For £10 million, the Englishman would be a smart signing for Southampton this summer.

Adarabioyo played 33 times in the Premier League last season, and has made two appearances in the Championship for Fulham so far this campaign.
