David Villa has lauded Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur as a ‘top-quality’ player at the Qatar World Cup for Uruguay.

The legendary striker, who secured the ultimate glory on the international stage with Spain, added that Tottenham’s thriving midfielder is a ‘fantastic’ footballer.

On the domestic stage, Bentancur has probably been his side’s best player this season and that magic is going to be needed in Doha for his nation’s final group game.

Uruguay are sitting bottom of Group H and they are going to need to beat Ghana, and other results to go their way, if they are to progress to the knockout stages.

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes netted a brace for Portugal to beat Uruguay last time out, but Bentancur did go on a solo run before those goals, only to be denied at point-blank range, with Villa stating that he would have ‘chipped’ the keeper if he was in that situation, as he told beIN SPORTS (28/11/22 at 7:55 pm).

“I thought he was going to chip,” said Villa. “But no, he decided to put it through the legs of the goalkeeper.

“I probably chip it. But Bentancur is fantastic and a top-quality player. But he’s not used to having this type of chance.”

BENTANCUR IS AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME

When Spurs purchased Bentancur for £22 million from Serie A giants Juventus (Sky Sports), he arrived with a low ceiling because he wasn’t exactly shining bright in Turin.

Juve were happy to part ways with him – and now that their entire board has resigned – that call from Bentancur to head to north London is a masterstroke of a move.

He’s probably Tottenham’s best player right now, playing under Antonio Conte, in the knockout stages of the Champions League, whilst Juve are in a heap of a mess and heading towards another few disastrous years.
