David Marshall has been encouraged to take in a second spell at Celtic when he leaves Wigan Athletic this summer by former Parkhead teammate Javier Sanchez Broto, while speaking to the Sun.
A year ago, the dominant force of Scottish football caused a stir north of the border when they announced that former Hoops hero Fraser Forster was on his way back to the green half of Glasgow.
And with a re-born and revitalised Forster now on his way back to Southampton after his loan spell has come to an end, speculation suggests that the England international could have his place taken by another returning hero.
It is 13 years since Marshall last played a game for Celtic.
But with the veteran shot-stopper available on a free transfer this summer after crisis-hit Wigan descended into administration, the Sun reports that a dramatic homecoming is on the cards.
35-year-old Marshall was a fresh-faced prospect when Sanchez Proto was starting between the sticks for Celtic and the Spaniard would love to see his former teammate’s career come full circle.
“People could talk about his age but 35 is not old for a goalkeeper. He has years ahead of him. Just look at Gianluigi Buffon. He’s 42 now and has signed on for another year at Juventus,” Sanchez Proto says.
“David is a top professional in good physical condition. He has been playing well. I am sure he would be happy to come back to Celtic because that is where it all started for him.
“Neil Lennon knows him well and it would make sense to bring him back. Celtic are a top club and need a top keeper. David has the ability to be that man.”
Marshall didn’t have the best game of his career on Saturday as Wigan’s worries deepened with a 3-0 defeat to Brentford, especially when an overhit cross from hat-trick hero Said Benrahma floated over his head and into the top corner.
But, make no mistake, Marshall may be 35 yet there is plenty of life in the old dog yet.
