Tottenham Hotspur’s reported hopes of signing Lewis Dunk is over after the defender signed a new contract with Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Sun reported on August 16 of interest in the central defender from North London club Tottenham.
The report also credited Chelsea with interest in taking the 28-year-old to Stamford Bridge for £40 million.
However, Brighton have just announced on their official website that the England international central defender has put pen to paper on a new contract.
The Seagulls have stated that the 28-year-old has signed a new five-year deal which will see him stay at the club until the end of the 2024-25 season at least.
Brighton manager Graham Potter told the club’s official website: “We’re absolutely delighted that Lewis has made this long-term commitment to the club. It’s fantastic news for everyone: the club, the supporters, the team and myself.
“Since I came to the club he’s been a joy to work with and he’s a top player. We are very lucky to have him.
“I think his role as captain is one he’s grown into and one he will do better and better for the next few years. He leads by example on the pitch and he’s a good lad off it – a delight to work with.”
Tottenham Hotspur have missed out
Dunk’s decision to stay at Brighton will come as a disappointment for Tottenham given the North London club’s reported interest in him.
With Jan Vertonghen having left Spurs earlier this month, the North London outfit could do with a new centre-back.
Dunk is an experienced and established Premier League player who has won one cap for England, and he would have made Spurs better and stronger at the back.
