John Terry has labelled Everton winger, Anthony Gordon, as a ‘top player’ on his Instagram story after a feisty Merseyside derby against Liverpool.

The boyhood Everton fan was at the thick of the action and involved in a number of controversial moments during his side’s 2-0 defeat on Sunday at Anfield.

From the get-go, it was obvious that Everton were going to sit deep and hit Liverpool on the break, with Gordon involved in a number of big-talking points during the game.

Pretty early on in the game, he appealed for a foul following a challenge from Trent Alexander-Arnold, before later in the first half being booked for diving, then possibly being fouled by Joel Matip inside the penalty area just after the break.

Either way, the 21-year-old was in the thick of it all and having a right ding-dong battle with Alexander-Arnold out on the flanks.

After the game, Terry posted this message about the player on his IG story, as the Chelsea legend was pretty clear about what he thought about the afternoon he had at Anfield.

“I love watching this young man,” said Terry. “Top player who will have a big career in the game.

“Gives everything for the shirt every week.”

Alexander-Arnold did get booked for his tackle on Gordon later on in the game, but the Liverpool right-back will feel he did his job in stopping him from scoring.

That would probably be the perspective of the Liverpool fans, although, it will be entirely different if you are on the other side.

There will be Everton fans questioning why they didn’t win a penalty following Matip’s challenge on Gordon as, at the time, the scores were still 0-0.

Either way, it’s something Everton can’t dwell on too much because they are currently sitting in the Premier League’s relegation zone heading into the final few weeks of the season.
