Reported Leeds United and Leicester City target Tommaso Pobega will become a ‘great player’ if he maintains his current progress, Spezia coach Vincenzo Italiano told Tuttomercatoweb.

While no one at the Stadio Alberto Picco is getting carried away just yet, Spezia can be quietly confident of retaining their place among Italian football’s elite for another year.

A 2-0 victory over title-chasing AC Milan lifted the newly-promoted side up to 13th in the Serie A table.

Although it remains to be seen if Spezia can survive again in 2021/22 without their legion of loanees, including Inter-owned teenager Lucien Agoume and 21-year-old Pobega.

The latter, nicknamed ‘new Nemanja Matic’ due to his rangy limbs and ball-winning skills, has been a revelation on loan from Milan, allegedly catching the eye of both Leeds and Leicester (Milan News).

“We are the second youngest team in Serie A. If they continue to grow and mature like this, they can become top level players,” said Italiano, who has also seen star striker M’bala Nzola linked with a move to the Premier League.

“We are full of top level players. If they continue like this they can become important.

“Pobega? He is in his first year in Serie A, he has already performed at a high level. He is physically strong, he has all the characteristics to become a great player.

“He has to work more, because he has great room for improvement.”

According to Calciomercato, AC Milan would listen to offers of around £9 million for the academy graduate.

But, after watching Rossoneri reject Manuel Locatelli develop into one of Europe’s most promising midfielders since being sold to Sassuolo, there are some at the San Siro who feel that Pobega deserves a chance to prove himself in the first-team (Tuttosport).
