Peter Schmeichel and Jamie Carragher were debating on CBS’ Champions League coverage on Wednesday night whether Jurgen Klopp would leave Liverpool for Bayern Munich.

The discussion first started when Carragher made it clear that there is ‘no chance’ of Klopp or any top manager leaving the club scene to manage on the international stage amid talk of the Liverpool boss taking the reigns of Germany.

He referenced someone like Ronald Koeman, who left the Dutch job to manage Barcelona, and how he wouldn’t do it the other way around because club football, Champions League, in particular, is seen as the pinnacle.

But after Carragher brushed off any thought of Klopp becoming Germany manager, Schmeichel then shifted the goalposts towards him possibly taking the reigns at Bayern.

“Think about this scenario,” said Schmeichel. “Let’s play with the idea that Hans-Dieter Flick takes the German job, which is not a given.

“Then Bayern needs a new coach and Jurgen Klopp has been offered that job before. That is an absolute top job. And it’s a top job in his own country. You say that he would never leave Liverpool for the German job. But would he leave it for Bayern Munich?”

Carragher responded: “He may leave it when his contract finishes but I don’t think he would break his contract. In his two previous jobs, he has always left when his contract has finished.

“He has come out and stated that publicly in the last week or so. I would imagine he would stand by his word. And he would want to improve on the season Liverpool have had this season.”

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Klopp is Bayern Munich manager one day, but surely not now.

Even though the German has delivered the Premier League title and the European Cup on Merseyside, it still seems as though he has unfinished business.

Liverpool will lose their title to Manchester City this season and a fired-up Klopp will be pretty eager to win that back when he has a fully-fit squad at his disposal next season.
