Top five goal providers in the 2013-14 PL – Suarez, Rooney and Ozil feature

All five players are bound for the World Cup this summer, with three set for England duty.

In what was a season full of goals, it isn’t always the creators that get the credit they deserve.

With both Manchester City and Liverpool hitting over one hundred goals in the League alone, there were plenty of players playing that killer pass, that instinctive flick, or the inch perfect cross that would open up a scoring opportunity, and here at HITC we have put together the Premier League’s top five goal providers with the help of Opta statistics.

Looking at the list below, the players banging in the goals were also the ones that assisted their teammates on numerous occasions, with four of the top five managing to get into double figures when it comes to finding the net themselves.

Steven Gerrard comes out on top after his last day double assist. It has been an excellent season for the Liverpool captain, although what is very much noticeable is that all but two of his assists have come from deadball deliveries – surely indicating the England man is one of the best set piece takers around.

Teammate Luis Suarez underlines his title as best player in the Premier League by coming just one behind Gerrard, yet with the vast majority of his assists coming in open play. Considering the fact he also topped the goal charts, it is some achievement for the Uruguayan.

Southampton’s Rickie Lambert is a surprise inclusion, justifying his England squad call up after his own superb campaign that saw him set up an impressive 10 goals. The former Bristol Rovers striker also scored 13 goals, missing just one Premier League game all season.

Wayne Rooney had a disrupted year, with injuries ruling him out on more than one occasion, but he still takes a position in the top four when it comes to providing goals for what turned out to be a struggling Manchester United side, in part due to his own set piece abilities.

Arsenal’s record signing Mesut Ozil sneaks into the list with 9 assists. Manchester City duo David Silva and Yaya Toure also had 9 but are edged out on account of the German’s much superior minutes per assist ratio, which is actually the best in open play of any player in the league. Arsenal can expect an even more settled Ozil next season, a frightening prospect for Premier League defences.
