Tony Cascarino has urged Tottenham on talkSPORT Weekend Breakfast to try and sign Manchester City defender, Aymeric Laporte.

Whilst the footballing world talks about Kane possibly leaving Spurs for the Etihad, Cascarino thinks they should try to lure Laporte’s talents towards their direction whilst they are it.

The Spain international is actually someone who has already been mentioned in a potential swap deal involving Kane.

And given that Spurs are looking for centre-back’s this summer, there’s no doubt that he would improve Nuno Espirito Santo’s backline, but fans surely wouldn’t want him brought in at the expense of Kane leaving?

Either way, former Republic of Ireland striker, Cascarino, thinks Laporte is a ‘top centre-half’ and a player that Spurs need.

“If I am Tottenham then I am trying to get Laporte,” said Cascarino. “Whether he would go to Tottenham because you never know where a player wants to go to?

“But if they lose Harry Kane. They need that type of centre-half. Laporte is a top centre-half, for me.

“If they can get him in, and he would want to go, then it would be a great signing for them. They need somebody like that.”

For a number of seasons, Laporte was Man City’s main guy at the back and a player they heavily relied on from a defensive aspect.

But last season, the £57 million player (BBC Sport) fell down down the pecking order, with new signing Ruben Dias taking the Premier League by storm, alongside the rejuvenated, John Stones.

Ahead of the new Premier League season, it doesn’t seem as though Laporte won’t be pushing ahead of the duo, so he might be tempted to leave in order to earn that game time.

But would he move to Tottenham who aren’t in the Champions League? Perhaps not because his qualities should be showcased on the bigger stage of them all, not the Europa Conference League.
