The main draw of the Australian Open is set to begin on 18 January, following a busy opening week at Melbourne Park.

Fans have already enjoyed plenty of highlights, including Roger Federer’s return and the new One-Point Slam format. Now attention turns to the main draw, where Jannik Sinner and Madison Keys will both be aiming to defend their titles.

Just a day before play begins, Arthur Cazaux has withdrawn from his first-round match.

Cazaux had earned direct entry into the main draw of the Australian Open, his ranking inside the top 100 securing his spot.

He was scheduled to face qualifier Jaime Faria in the opening round, but an elbow injury has ruled him out of this year’s tournament.

It’s disappointing news for Cazaux, who made a name for himself at last year’s Australian Open by reaching the fourth round as a wildcard.

During that run, he picked up wins over Laslo Djere, Holger Rune and Tallon Griekspoor before falling to Hubert Hurkacz. The Frenchman will now be replaced by Belgian player Alexander Blockx, who lost to Jason Kubler in the final round of qualifying.

Blockx had to retire from that match due to fitness issues, so there are still questions about his condition heading into the main draw. It remains unclear whether he’ll be able to complete his first-round match or if another withdrawal is on the cards.

Matteo Berrettini has also decided to pull out of the tournament. The Italian, who has a history of injury issues, had already skipped the Kooyong Classic just before the Australian Open.

Berrettini confirmed his decision with a message to fans: “I’m really sorry to have to withdraw from the tournament. I have always enjoyed being and playing here and feeling your incredible support.

“Thank you to the tournament for their fantastic organisation and I hope to see you all again soon.”

In his place, world number 113 Mackenzie McDonald will enter the draw as a lucky loser.
