Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Derby County all rank among the top 10.
Overall season ticket sales in the Championship, League One and League Two are up, EFL have claimed. That may be down in part to Newcastle United’s relegation from the Premier League, given the Magpies enormous crowds which dwarf the vast majority of the rest of the EFL.
The top 10 Championship teams with the highest season ticket sales were also disclosed, and the listings were largely to be expected. In fact, the top 10 teams with the most season ticket sales are the exact same 10 teams with the highest average attendances in the Championship, although not in the same order.
Newcastle United lead in both respects, whilst Derby County have the second highest season ticket sales but the third highest average attendance. Aston Villa come in second in terms of average attendance, but they rank only sixth for season ticket sales, after a dreadful season in the Premier League last term.
Newcastle United have the most season tickets sold and the highest average attendance in the Championship
Brighton & Hove Albion rank third highest for season ticket sales, but sixth for average attendance, perhaps suggesting some teams don’t fancy the long trip down to the south coast, which is some hike, especially for the northern sides.
Leeds United are down in ninth for season ticket sales, below Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town, down in part to some supporters opposition to Massimo Cellino. Despite this, the Whites still rank seventh for average attendances so far, a figure which will only rise once Elland Road has played host to Newcastle this weekend.
Bristol City also make the top 10, ahead of the likes of Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City, a reflection of the feel-good factor at Ashton Gate. The completion of the West Stand, now named the ‘Lansdown Stand’, twinned with excitement surrounding Lee Johnson’s management saw a spike in the Robins sales over the summer.
Leeds United have sold the ninth most season tickets in the Championship
The other two teams who make up the top 10 for season ticket sales are Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Norwich averaged 26,972 in the Premier League last season, and their numbers have barely dropped in the Championship despite the clubs relegation.
Wolves’ slight increase in sales from last season may be due in part to the club’s takeover, and the appointment of the since dismissed Walter Zenga. They rank eighth in the Championship for season ticket sales and eighth for average attendances.
EFL did not share the teams who have sold the fewest season tickets, although one would suspect that Burton Albion were safe bets for last place. The Brewers have an average attendance of just 4,934, less than half of last seasons Championship lowest average (Rotherham United).
Attendances are slightly up on last season at Molineux
