Aston Villa have been linked with a move for the Manchester United goalkeeper this week.

Aston Villa chairman Tony Xia has taken to Twitter today to quash yet another transfer rumour regarding the club.

It came after a tweet suggested that Villa had missed out on a loan move for Manchester United’s talented goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

But Xia was quick to deny this, stating:

It was reported by the Daily Mail yesterday that United had rejected a bid from Aston Villa, among other Championship clubs, for the services of the talented stopper.

But it appears that Xia is keen to distance himself and the club from such talk.

The Championship side have already brought in a new goalkeeper this summer, with Pierluigi Gollini arriving from Hellas Verona.

However, the Italian has had his struggles early on this season and it could have been seen as a move for Villa to cover their current number one with Johnstone’s signature.

But Villa already have Mark Bunn and Jed Steer in reserve, two keepers more than capable of coping in the second-tier – so a move for Johnstone did seem unlikely.

The Manchester United goalie is now being heavily linked with Nottingham Forest, but it appears Villa are happy with their goalkeeping stock.
