Aston Villa reached the Championship play-off final last night.

Aston Villa owner Dr Tony Xia looks on before the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Sunderland at Villa Park on November 21, 2017 in Birmingham, England.

Aston Villa are into the Championship play-off final after beating West Bromwich Albion on penalties on Tuesday night.

Villa went into the second leg of their semi-final clash with a 2-1 lead, and travelled to The Hawthorns looking to see off a Baggies side missing suspended goalscorer Dwight Gayle.

However, Villa fell behind on the stroke of the half hour mark, as Craig Dawson nodded home a long throw-in for West Brom, levelling the scores on aggregate.

Villa looked to have been given the boost they needed in the second half when Chris Brunt was sent off for two yellow cards, but they couldn’t take advantage.

Villa toiled away looking for the crucial goal, but after 120 minutes, the sides were level, meaning the game went to penalties – and Jed Steer was the hero.

Steer saved spot kicks from Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi, and whilst Albert Adomah’s miss gave the Baggies hope, Tammy Abraham converted the crucial kick to send Villa through.

They must now wait to see whether it’s Leeds United or Derby County meeting them, but almost a year after losing the Championship play-off final to Fulham, Villa are back in the big game.

After the win, former Villa owner Tony Xia took to Twitter to react, celebrating the win before being sent a number of messages by Villa fans.

Some still aren’t quite keen on Xia after last summer’s financial issues, but others admitted they still love Xia and love that he still takes an interest in Villa, with some urging him to make the trip to Wembley for the final.
