Aston Villa owner Tony Xia has taken to Twitter to send messages to fans after the club’s season ended with a 1-1 home draw against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Villa fell behind to the already-promoted Seagulls when Nathan Baker was sent off for a foul on Sam Baldock, with Glenn Murray stepping up to score from the penalty spot.
That would have given Brighton the Championship title, but Villa hit back late in the day, with Jack Grealish hitting a deflected strike to give Villa a point on the final day of the Championship season.
The result means that Villa end the campaign in 13th place in the Championship table, bringing an end to what has been an eventful if disappointing season.
Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce
Not only have Villa seen Roberto Di Matteo and Steve Bruce take charge of the club this season, but they have made 16 signings since the end of last season, and have endured lengthy winless runs during spells of the campaign.
Now, Bruce will be hoping to turn Villa into promotion contenders for next season, with more new additions expected to arrive during the summer transfer window.
Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish scores their first goal
After the final whistle at Villa Park this afternoon, club owner Tony Xia took to Twitter to suggest that there is plenty of work to do this summer, claiming that Villa almost wasted last summer’s transfer window by signing flops such as Pierluigi Gollini and Ross McCormack.
Xia added that he would rate Villa’s season at 59 out of 100, stating that the club need results next season after such a disappointing campaign.
