Aston Villa hero Paul McGrath has sent a message to club owner Tony Xia.

Aston Villa legend Paul McGrath has taken to Twitter to urge owner Tony Xia not to do ‘major surgery’ on the squad during this month’s transfer window.

Villa were in action today, but fell to a 1-0 defeat away at Cardiff City, as Joe Ralls’ early goal proved to be the winner at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The result leaves Villa seven points off the Championship play-off places, and further underlined that Bruce needs some reinforcements during this month’s transfer window.

A new goalkeeper appears to be on the way, with the Birmingham Mail reporting that a deal for Manchester United’s Sam Johnstone is close, whilst Bruce may seek some attacking cover given that Jonathan Kodjia and Jordan Ayew are heading to the Africa Cup of Nations, whilst Rudy Gestede is set to join Middlesbrough (Daily Mail).

With the transfer window now open, Villa will be hoping to get business done quickly, and club hero Paul McGrath has sent a message to owner Tony Xia about transfer business.

McGrath, now 57, made more than 250 appearances for Villa as he became a club hero, and it’s clear that he keeps an eye on the club judging by his message to Xia this afternoon.

The former defender urged Xia not to do ‘major surgery’ on the Villa squad, suggesting that the club should keep the faith in their existing squad as they look to win promotion back to the Premier League.

Xia responded later in the afternoon, calming fears of major surgery to the squad whilst acknowledging that Villa understand where they must strengthen this month.
