Aston Villa are currently 20th in the Championship.

Aston Villa owner Tony Xia has responded on Twitter to an article by the Birmingham Mail which suggested the club’s current predicament is down to psychological issues within the squad.

Villa, who were relegated last season, are 20th in the Championship having won just one of their opening 12 league matches.

The last of those was overseen by a new manager in Steve Bruce, after predecessor Roberto Di Matteo – whom Xia hired back in June – was sacked during the recent international break.

Bruce’s arrival, however, has not yet addressed an all too familiar problem – that being Villa’s failure to hold onto leads, after they were pegged back by Wolverhampton Wanderers to draw 1-1 on Saturday.

Xia, though, does not agree that the Villans’ players’ mentality is to blame, and suggested Di Matteo’s methods are instead at fault.

The Chinese businessman posted on Twitter:

Bruce has been in charge for less than a week, but his track record of four promotions from his last four seasons as a manager at this level suggests the 56-year-old will soon put things right at Villa Park.

Bruce, a former Birmingham City boss, tasted promotion as recently as May this year with previous club Hull City.
