Aston Villa’s summer of transition has been brutal for many behind the scenes at Villa Park.

On the most part, all of those that have departed will not be missed by Villa fans who were pleased to see the back of them.

The same cannot be said about Gordon ‘Sid’ Cowans.

The club confirmed today that the club legend was departing Aston Villa and Cowans had this to say in his exit statement:

“All good things must come to an end someday and it is right to make this change at this time.

“Although I will no longer be turning up to work for this great club, I will remain a lifelong supporter.”

The 57-year-old spent three spells with Villa as a player, winning the Division 1 title and European Cup during his time at Villa Park.

He has worked in the youth academy at Villa for a number of years and has also been first-team coach at times during his 18-year stay with Villa in a coaching capacity.

His departure has not gone down so well with Villa fans, but club chairman and owner Dr Tony Xia has insisted on Twitter he does not know the reason for his departure, but that he trusts new technical director Steve Round:

Round took up the role at the start of the month and has been tasked with restructuring the club behind the scenes.

It is not known if Cowans’ exit is as a result of this, or through mutual agreement.

Aston Villa fans will no doubt wish ‘Sid’ all the best in his future endeavours, and hope his absence does not prove detrimental.
