Aston Villa have brought the veteran centre-back to the club,

Aston Villa chairman Tony Xia has taken to Twitter to confirm the signing of free agent John Terry.

The former England international was out of contract after leaving Chelsea at the end of last season, and now it seems Villa have tied up a deal for the 36-year-old.

Terry featured 690 times for Chelsea, scoring 65 goals and providing 29 assists in the process.

Chelsea's John Terry in action

Last season he struggled for regular game time, managing only 14 appearances in all competitions and just nine in the league.

Now he has the chance to put that disappointment behind him and have one last hurrah at Villa Park.

Villa will be hoping Terry’s considerable experience ensures Steve Bruce’s side can mount a serious title challenge this season, securing a return to the top flight 12 months later than previously planned.

Villa fell well short of what was expected of them last time out. although Bruce is setting about building a team capable of securing automatic promotion and Terry’s experience should not be understated.

While he is very much a short-term fix for Villa, he could be exactly what they need, excelling in the second tier and ensuring the club improve their defence to ensure dropped points in must-win fixtures are a thing of the past.
