Jonathan Kodjia rescued a point as Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Leeds United on Thursday.
Aston Villa drew 1-1 at home with Leeds United on Thursday evening, prompting reacts on Twitter from owner Tony Xia and club hero Paul McGrath.
Villa entered the game having beaten Burton Albion 2-1 on Boxing Day, and were also unbeaten at Villa Park this season having made their home a fortress again.
Leeds’ Pontus Jansson scores the opening goal
However, Leeds – who hammered Preston 4-1 on Boxing Day – put that record at risk as Pontus Jansson headed home Stuart Dallas’ second half corner, with the aid of some slack goalkeeping from Mark Bunn.
Swedish defender Jansson then hit the bar just moments later as promotion-chasing Leeds looked to kill the game off, but were made to pay late on, as Liam Cooper’s handball gave Villa the chance to score with an 86th minute penalty.
Aston Villa’s Jonathan Kodjia scores his side’s equaliser
Ivory Coast international Jonathan Kodjia stepped up for Villa and sent Robert Green the wrong way, rescuing a 1-1 draw for Villa to keep that unbeaten home run going, and notching his ninth goal of the season.
After the final whistle, Villa owner Tony Xia took to Twitter to state that he was ‘gutted’ with the result, as Villa forced Green into making key saves for Leeds, suggesting that one point could have been three for Steve Bruce’s side.
Whilst Xia clearly felt Villa could have won the game, club hero Paul McGrath also took to Twitter, and wasn’t quite as impressed with Villa, suggesting that he was relieved rather than happy to have grabbed a late point.
