James Tavernier of Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers has been getting a bit of stick in recent weeks.
Former Celtic hitman Tony Watt is praising Rangers star James Tavernier on Twitter.
The Gers’ right-back set up Alfredo Morelos this afternoon as Steven Gerrard’s side booked a League Cup final date with the Hoops by beating Hearts at Hampden Park.
It was a very bright moment in an otherwise much-maligned few weeks for the Rangers captain, who missed a penalty in a win over Motherwell at Ibrox seven days ago.
In doing so, the English defender has now fluffed three penalties out of five this season and also came in for criticism for his performance in the Europa League defeat by Young Boys last month.
But the ex-Celtic attacker singled him out for praise on social media today, insisting that he’s a striker’s ‘dream’ to play alongside due to his attacking instincts.
Watt is absolutely right in saying that Tavernier is a striker’s dream. After all, he has 10 assists across all competitions this season – and got an unbelievable 20 last term.
For a defender, it’s a mighty fine return and reinforces that the Rangers man is probably the best full-back in Scotland by way of attacking.
Defending is another matter altogether, however, and until the 28-year-old cuts out the silly mistakes, setting up and scoring goals doesn’t matter if he’s complicit in leaking them.
