Tony Pulis hailed Harry Kane as a ‘top, top-class’ player and backed the Tottenham Hotspur striker to break Jimmy Greaves’ all-time club-record for goals.

On Saturday, Kane added goal number 256 to his name in Spurs colours, when Antonio Conte’s side secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

It was a deft, yet subtle header from Kane that sealed the points for his side and it now puts him ten goals behind club legend and perhaps the greatest English striker of all-time, Jimmy Greaves.

The England great scored 266 goals in 380 games whilst in the colours of the Lilywhites and Kane is now ten behind that record – he has played 17 games more.

There’s no doubt that Kane will get to that mark during these coming months, perhaps even before the start of the World Cup in November.

But whilst Kane’s record is incredible, Jimmy Greaves’ is on another level, especially given that his strike rate is far better than the man now leading the line in north London.

Nonetheless, Pulis was full of praise for the current Three Lions captain, as he also shared a moment of the game against Brighton which left him ‘annoyed’, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

“Well, he’s a top, top-class player,” said Pulis. “Absolutely brilliant (on Kane being 10 goals behind Jimmy Greaves’ club-record goals of 266 goals in 380 games versus Kane’s record of 256 in 397).

“He has been brilliant and he will get there, no doubt about it.

On Spurs back three: “That’s what annoys me more than anything else. You are playing with three centre-halves and they are marking one player, yet nobody knows who is picking him up. At that turnover, one pass can let him in. They should be more organised than that. Dier should be organising it.”

KANE HEADING TOWARDS GREATNESS

When the dust has settled, Tottenham fans far and wide will be debating whether Kane is, not only their greatest-ever striker, but perhaps their greatest-ever player.

From the subtle touch of Glenn Hoddle to the legendary goal of Ricky Villa, there have been some start-studded names that have represented Tottenham.

Some, like Gareth Bale, played in eras when the club weren’t hitting the heights it did under Mauricio Pochettino or during their trophy-winning days of the 80s.

Kane is finding himself searching for that all-elusive first trophy, if there were XI of him, then Spurs would have cleaned up by now, but with Antonio Conte at the helm, this is the best chance the club have of ending their trophy drought.
