The West Bromwich Albion manager is a big fan of the Watford skipper.
West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis
Baggies boss Tony Pulis spoke to reporters during his pre-match press conference, and raved about Watford striker Troy Deeney, although he did state that he doesn’t believe the 28-year-old will be up for grabs this summer, as quoted by the Daily Star.
The Hornets hitman has scored nine goals and chipped in with three assists in 28 Premier League appearances for his club so far this term, but it is his all-around influence on the Watford side which makes him such an important player for Walter Mazzarri’s men.
Pulis takes his West Brom side to Vicarage Road to take on Watford tomorrow night, and the Baggies manager will surely have a plan in place in an attempt to counteract the threat posed by Deeney.
The Black Country outfit have been linked with a move for the Hornets striker more than once over the past 12 months, but Pulis poured cold water on talk of any kind of potential bid for Deeney, despite raving about his qualities, as quoted by the Daily Star:
Watford’s Troy Deeney celebrates
“I’ve got a lot of time for Troy and it’s brilliant to see him playing in the Premier League but he’s a Watford player so I will show them respect on that. Troy has had a smashing career. I don’t think Watford want to sell him anyway.”
On the face of it, the former Walsall striker would be a great addition to the West Brom squad, if any kind of move came to fruition in the summer.
There is one major problem though.
His playing style is fairly similar to Salomon Rondon’s, so unless the Baggies are planning on selling the Venezuelan, there would be little benefit in bringing Deeney to the club, if Pulis persists with his usual formation with just one striker.
West Brom would surely be better served in buying a smaller, more mobile front-man, who would complement Rondon’s game.
And judging by Pulis’ comments regarding Watford’s stance on Deeney, it is unlikely that the 28-year-old will be plying his trade at the Hawthorns next term.
