West Bromwich Albion are close to signing Kevin Wimmer from Tottenham Hotspur.
The report claims that the Baggies are close to reaching an agreement with Tottenham and Wimmer. The club do not see him as a direct replacement for Jonny Evans, who was the subject of a failed £18 million offer from City.
The Telegraph added that the negotiations between the two clubs are now at an advanced stage, and it looks like a deal could be struck in the next few days.
Should the deal go through, which seems more likely, he would represent a terrific signing for the Baggies.
Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson was West Brom’s first choice target this summer, but they pulled out of the race after the Championship club refused to lower their £25 million valuation.
The 24-year-old central defender arrived at White Hart Lane from German club FC Koln in the summer of 2015 with a lot of promise, but failed to make a mark under Mauricio Pochettino.
He made only four Premier League starts last season, but that doesn’t make him a bad player of a sudden.
He is a no-nonsense defender, whose game is based on positional awareness. Apart from his physicality, he doesn’t rush into tackles and loves to play the ball from defence.
Being a left-footed defender he would add balance to the defence, especially when partnered against experienced centre-backs like Jonny Evans or Gareth McAuley.
Moreover, £15 million is a decent value for a defender of his quality, given the inflated transfer window.
West Brom have reportedly beaten the likes of Stoke City and Crystal Palace for his signing, and should they keep hold of Evans, the Baggies will have a solid defensive set up.
