Jay Rodriguez made his competitive debut for West Bromwich Albion in their victory over Bournemouth at the weekend.

Tony Pulis has suggested that he was delighted with Jay Rodriguez’s performance in West Brom’s win over Bournemouth at the weekend, but admitted being disappointed for the forward after he was unable to get on the scoresheet, the Express and Star reports.

The Baggies kicked off their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Cherries at the Hawthorns in a game that presented Rodriguez with the opportunity to make his competitive debut for the club following his summer switch from Southampton.

But despite the striker looking bright – especially in the first-half – it was fellow summer signing Ahmed Hegazi who bagged the winner.

And Pulis suggested that the Englishman was deserving of getting amongst the goals, but added that he was impressed by his overall performance.

“Jay’s been absolutely fantastic for us in pre-season,” said Pulis, as reported by the Express and Star.

“His attitude and approach and everything else. He’s not match fit yet, but he will get there and he’ll be a handful. He was a handful on Saturday. I was just disappointed he’s not scored because he deserved to.”

Though Rodriguez did not score, he certainly provided plenty of indications that he will justify the club’s decision to sign him during this window.

The former Saints ace looked lively and came agonisingly close to finding the back of the net on a number of occasions, and that confidence may perhaps give West Brom the kind of lethal edge they desperately needed last season.
