Tony Pulis has suggested that West Brom owner Guochuan Lai only tends to attend the Baggies’ games with the top clubs in the Premier League to try and work out what the side need to make that next step, the Express and Star reports.

West Brom have arguably been one of the top flight’s biggest surprises this term as they go into the final eight games of the campaign eighth in the table, well clear of the sides below them.

But while some Baggies supporters would be delighted with such a performance, Pulis has explained that the ambitious club owner is only looking up and tries to use his infrequent appearances at West Brom games wisely.

“He says he picks the big games because he wants to see the difference between the top clubs and top players compared to what we have got to spend,” he said, as reported by the Express and Star. “But I think everyone knows there is a massive gap.”

While Pulis is pessimistic about the club’s hopes of forcing their way further up the table, he should be optimistic about Lai’s ambitions as it may perhaps boost the resources he has to work with in the transfer market.

West Brom were fairly reserved in terms of incomings last summer, but have undoubtedly created an impressive team having added quality with the signings of Nacer Chadli and Matt Phillips.

And the owner may look at that squad and feel that it may be time to make one or two marquee signings that could help the Baggies close the gap to the top seven and perhaps make more of an impact in the cup competitions.
